“Art is an outlet toward regions which are not ruled by time and space”
— Marcel Duchamp

Avant-Guardian Musings is a curated space of ideas and information, resources, reviews and readings for undergraduate and graduate students studying modern and contemporary art history and visual art theory, film and photography studies, and the expanding field of visual culture and screen studies. For students currently enrolled in my courses or the field school, the blog and associated social media links also serve as a place of reflection and an extension of the ideas and visual material raised in lecture and seminar discussion.

The women shined brightest in every way at MoMA— Joan Jonas, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Agnes Martin, Frida Khalo, Helen Frankenthaler, Meret Oppenheim, all represented, both in regular collection and the well-conceived “Long Run” exhibition (swipe ▶️for taste) 👌🏻🙌🏻 #moma #contemporaryart #nyc #modernart

Taking in all that is MoMA today, and I settled on this mesmerizing Richter for my fantasy pick (all 15 of the October 18, 1977 series were in one room— we were also fortunate to see the set at the Pompidou for his retrospective back in 2012). You cannot take your eyes off of these canvases—the way Richter captured the effect of blurred television coverage and media accounts of the day.... incredible works that transform our relationship to what “history painting” can be in the 20th century #gerhardrichter #moma #contemporarypainting #nyc #contemporaryart

When the door guy asked us if we wanted to sit right up front by the mike, we took a deep breath and agreed 🙈Michelle Wolf was the headliner!! (of White House correspondent dinner fame) and she rocked it. All of our comedy wishes came true at the famed Comedy Cellar (no cells allowed, so this was the best I could do) 🎤💫🥂#comedycellar #michellewolf #standup #nyc #newyork

Over a century and a half of architectural history and styles in one photo— I have been photographing this very same spot over many years visiting NYC 💙🏙📷#newyork #midtown #architecturalhistory #architecture #parkavenue
