“Art is an outlet toward regions which are not ruled by time and space”
— Marcel Duchamp

Avant-Guardian Musings is a curated space of ideas and information, resources, reviews and readings for undergraduate and graduate students studying modern and contemporary art history and visual art theory, film and photography studies, and the expanding field of visual culture and screen studies. For students currently enrolled in my courses or the field school, the blog and associated social media links also serve as a place of reflection and an extension of the ideas and visual material raised in lecture and seminar discussion.

Happy International Female Ride Day 💃🏼🏍️💨✨🔥 Learning to ride a motorcycle was a huge turning point in my life. For women, the gifts of riding are wrapped up in building confidence, strength, and being in the moment. You also learn to ignore a lot of outside noise and trust your instincts. But it all starts with training. Weekly Flipboard Links and Media Round Up

May 29, 2016

With the end of May upon us, I am looking forward to attending and being part of my university's spring convocation ceremonies this week. Taking out the doctoral regalia (thank you Lara for letting me share with you the UBC robes!) and sitting on stage welcoming another class into the ranks of the initiated, I am reminded of both my own long journey through university, but also the mixed feelings of relief, accomplishment, and fear that accompanies this particular right of passage. Many of my conversations with past and present students this week have been focused around the transition out of post-secondary into the "real world." I have given up trying to offer comfort or any firm pronouncements about what the future promises young people in the creative economy. Students today are far too smart for all that, and my own irregular path and that of so many of my colleagues is testament enough that whatever you think you will be doing in 5-10 years will be upended.

Instead, I offer the idea that kept me moving ahead with my path through school for so many years-- that there are very few periods in life that one gets to study, to think, and to create for the pure purpose of learning and growing. That time will pass whatever you end of doing, and the unknowability of the future will always remain. So why not embrace these years of learning/thinking/creating as a unique kind of skill-set to prepare you for the unpredictability of life that awaits us all. Wishing all of you a fantastic week-- enjoy the links-- and for those preparing to graduate, know that you have already succeeded by completing one of life's toughest obstacle courses.

Weekly Flipboard Links and Media Round Up

May 23, 2016

Halfway through teaching a condensed summer course in Film Studies, I am still catching my breath-- double the grading/lecturing in half the time is always a big adjustment! Still, I have had a great group of engaged students and have also been able to screen a few films that I have not seen in years, including the original pre-code Public Enemy (1931) starring James Cagney (a must see!). In the art world and on my media feeds, the May art auctions are slowly wrapping up and bringing about much of the expected commentary and discussion regarding valuation, the status of big sales, corruption, and ongoing angst  about the state of the market. I continue to be fascinated by the transparency brought about through instant sales reporting and behind the scenes insights at the big auctions. Speculation about where the future of the market is headed and how it impacts art cities and their ecosystems is especially heated once again. Several of my links reflect the range of discourse. Enjoy the selection and the remainder of the Victoria Day long weekend (if you are in Canada)!

Weekly Flipboard Links and Media Round Up

May 01, 2016

Tying up loose ends and making plans for the new semester, this week's activities were like a spring cleaning of sorts and had me turning attention to several neglected projects and dusting off and catching up on all sorts of things. I love the end of an academic year for just this kind of organizing-- the prospect of long uninterrupted chunks of time to think, research, plan, and write is both exciting but also a bit daunting.

The social media landscape this week has still been very much caught up with discussion of Prince's passing and legacy, and then the surprise drop of Beyonce's latest album Lemonade drew attention and discussion for her combined use of film and the long album format as a revival or remix of more traditional media forms. Then of course there was the teasing out of the more personal and salacious details of the album's content. I have included what I think was one of the best think pieces on that topic in this week's media picks, but I am looking forward to seeing and reading more on this album in the future. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, and happy reading!

Weekly Flipboard Links and Media Round Up

April 24, 2016

With the passing of Prince, the world has lost yet another music icon. For me, as a child and teenager of the 80's, Prince's music was omnipresent-- it was on the radio, playing on the TV via music videos, at school dances and teen night clubs, and blasting in my house on the stereo late at night while dancing with friends or cramming for exams. I still remember hanging the cool poster inside the Purple Rain album on my bedroom wall and thinking it was especially awesome that Prince had so many women in his band. This weekend my husband and I listened several times to Purple Rain (the 1984 album itself is a journey, and needs to be experienced from beginning to end as Prince intended) and reminisced, like so many others, about what the music meant to us as kids but also in the transition to adulthood. Prince represented a kind of freedom and danger that many other of the 1980's pop icons (like Madonna, Billy Idol, David Bowie, and bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and The Cult) also epitomized. Included in this week's links are a few notable selections celebrating Prince's memory (including that incredible performance at the 40th anniversary SNL after-party!).  A true artist in every way, Prince, like so many other talented musicians, was taken from this world far too soon. RIP.

Weekly Flipboard Links and Media Round Up

April 17, 2016

I'm back with my weekly round up after an unplanned hiatus. Long story short, the past several weeks have been very busy both personally and professionally with unexpected events and changes in plans, but I am simply glad that the end of the semester and final exams are on the horizon. I have stacks of grading still to do, but this is the time of year when I get to fully take account of all the hard work that has gone into student projects, papers, and yes, even those dreaded exams. Enjoy my weekly selection of media links, and I look forward to returning to a more regular schedule of blogging in the weeks and months to come!
