Avant-Guardian Musings is a curated space of ideas and information, resources, reviews and readings for undergraduate and graduate students studying modern and contemporary art history and visual art theory, film and photography studies, and the expanding field of visual culture and screen studies. For students currently enrolled in my courses or the field school, the blog and associated social media links also serve as a place of reflection and an extension of the ideas and visual material raised in lecture and seminar discussion.

As global trade wars intensify and the world faces a total realignment of political interests and partnerships, it remains critical to pay attention to what the billionaire class is doing, especially in the realm of art and culture. With all that is happening today, I thought it timely to announce that I will be traveling to Switzerland next month to participate in a conference examining Neoliberalism and the Capitalists at the University of Lausanne. My paper, titled “Savage Capitalism: Hypermodern Kitsch, Contemporary Art, and the Billionaire Class” is one I have been working on the past few months, but has had to be revised, re-written, and updated with all that has transpired since I first proposed it back in fall 2024. I have never felt more urgency as an academic to speak out, and I feel fortunate to have been invited to participate among such esteemed researchers working in the field of economics and political history. I am happy to share the program and range of research reprinted in the conference poster.
